SUMMARY:NewsIR’16
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nMainstream media outlets are often among the most relevant\, influential and powerful sources of information. This ranges from the influence that newspapers have on elections to the damage to a brand’s reputation that a negative article on a popular blog can cause. \nInformation Retrieval (IR) applied to news has been a popular research area for decades but it would be a mistake to assume that news search has been ‘solved’. Not only can algorithms still be improved but also there are serious gaps in the state of the art that need to be addressed. \nIn this workshop\, we will stimulate discussion around new and powerful uses of IR applied to news sources. We invite contributions on any of the multiple IR tasks that can help solve real user problems in this area. \nMore info: http://research.signalmedia.co/newsir16/

SUMMARY:Concert - a.bel and Berklee College of Music
DESCRIPTION:The concert “a.bel – New Music Interactive” had its second edition in the David Friend Hall\, one of the auditoriums of the Berklee College of Music in Boston\, on March 3\, with a presence of about 100 spectators. \n“The concert was not exactly a replica since there was a new piece made by students from Berklee Interdisciplinary Arts Institute\,” explains Rui Penha\, investigator of Telecommunications and Multimedia Centre of INESC TEC and responsible for the project. \nThe idea of bringing the concert to Boston came from Neil Leonard\, Professor at Berklee College of Music\, which had been in Portugal to prepare a piece for the concert held at the House of Music in October 2015. “In his will (Neil Leonard) to do it again the concert in Boston\, joined our willingness to test some solutions we have developed since October and so it happened\, “says Rui Penha. \nThe strategy designed for the concert was different from what was used in the Casa da Música. According to Rui Penha was used “mainly the sound from smartphones and acoustic instruments. We placed the public into two halves\, face to face\, and made some experimental test before starting the concert.” The public was thus even more integral part of the concert once the interaction with the musicians was higher. “I saw some people voluntarily swap their smartphone with people who were next only to experience a particular form of interaction\, which says a lot about the way the a.bel is able to make this device as a personal experience catalyst collective\, ” said the researcher. \nThe INESC TEC team that was involved in debut concert at Casa da Música\, also worked on this event in Boston\, directly or indirectly. However\, only three members had the opportunity to travel to the United States: Rui Penha\, Gilberto Bernardes and Alexandre Clément\, also researchers from the Telecommunications and Multimedia Centre of INESC TEC.

SUMMARY:Interactive Installation - resono @ Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado
DESCRIPTION:Resono is an interactive installation based on the principle that the basis of autonomy is the capacity to say\, “No!” It consists of an ecosystem of 15 beings who await the arrival of a visitor\, each of them with different emotions ranging from anxiety to curiosity. This is the first step in the development of an interaction\, achieved through the courteousness with which one approaches the beings and the tenderness with which one sings to a small group of them.  Gradually\, and if patient\, one can begin to hear tentative resonances that are actually how these beings learn to communicate with the unfamiliar stimulus by using imitation. From this point onwards\, the story of each interaction will be unique and will depend on the delicate understanding of each of the participants’ states of mind; in truly exceptional cases\, it is possible for the entire ecosystem to come together for a collective performance. Each successful experience will live on in the dreams of each of the resono‘s beings and will mark the continual development of their personalities. \nMore info here.
